The MoviesByWomen.com Audio Podcast Channel is dedicated to promoting feature films directed by women. Join us in a discussion about the entertainment industry, filmmaker resources, and tales from the front lines of the independent film production universe. Our hosts include Director Tara Veneruso, the Alliance of Women Directors' Stephanie Young, Director Lucy Rodriguez Watson, and PrettyScary.net's Heidi Martinuzzi.

You may not know it, but only 7% of Hollywood features are directed by women!! That is shocking & embarrasing for a country that claims to have equality for women in the workplace. In order to change the perception of women around this globe we must have more women making films. Film directors are culture creators for the globe. Don't let apathy get you! Don't get convinced that women should only make small arthouse &"women-topic movies". That's such a pre-1970's notion. Women can make top grossing films! This is an important issue to tackle for true equality.

Audio Podcast 10: Distribution & The Importance of your DVD's Bonus Features

 <itunes:author>MoviesByWomen.com</itunes:author>

Back by popular demand- but new and improved audio version only...

A new episode every week this year. Go to moviesbywomen.com for downloads.

This week in the MoviesByWomen audio podcast 10: In Episode 10, hosts Tara Veneruso, Stephanie Young, Lucy Rodriguez Watson, and Heidi Martinuzzi chat with Chela Johnson, VP of Marketing at Lionsgate.

This is a super fun and informative podcast. Chela shares her career path (from an assistant at Artisan to VP of Marketing at Lionsgate), she gives us an insight on distribution both theatrical and home entertainment (DVD). We discuss DVD featurettes including commentaries and making of features on a DVD. The most valuable piece of information: If you’re even thinking of shooting a movie – start thinking about the featurettes for your DVD release.

The discussion on featurettes and making of on DVDs sparks a debate of sorts.
Lucy feels that after watching the making of or a commentary of a bad film, she usually appreciates the film because of all the work that went into it .Stephanie thinks that the point of a good movie is not to have it explained to you. Take a listen and tell us what
you think.

As we discuss horror movies the conversation turns to British food (maybe it’s the blood sausage, the spotted dick and the blood pudding). Heidi and Chela give an educated guess as to why things that are not pudding are called pudding. Check out the end of each podcast for more on British food with Rick and Tara.

One of our hit list items (The Business of Being Born) sparks a conversation about giving birth at home, in a bathtub vs. the hospital. Tara is uncomfortable with the idea of having a baby in a regular bathtub (she has a slight case of OCD), Heidi is afraid that the baby would drown. The film trails a Manhattan midwife who brings a special pool for the delivery, so no worries for Tara and Heidi.

This week in the MoviesByWomen audio podcast 07: In Episode 7, hosts Tara Veneruso, Stephanie Young, Lucy Rodriguez Watson, and Heidi Martinuzzi talk about actresses turned directors. Tara wonders why Julie Delpy’s film Two Days in Paris sounds so similar to Before Sunset. Lucy gives a brief review of Sarah Polley’s Away From Her. Cheryl Hines directs Serious Moonlight written by Adrienne Shelly, another actress turned director who unfortunately died too soon. The conversation shifts to daughters of famous directors. Stephanie discusses the challenge of putting together a panel of women directors sharing their experiences on having a family and maintaining a career.

What’s the best way to move up in the editing room? Be an apprentice, work long hours for little or no pay and LOVE what you do. You can’t look like a girl, you need to blend in with the boys and wear gender neutral clothes. Tara gives a lecture about proper attire for work (on set and the editing room) – No bangly crap, no skirts, no cutesy painted toes etc. The ladies share advice on how to make relationships and career work. And finally, a heated discussion on dating/marriage/family and babies when you are a woman director. Tara shares her opinion on the best time to get pregnant while making a movie.
